Hello, friends!

Today I’m returning from a quick trip to see my daughter (A college senior! 🤯), her Huskies (They won! 🎉) and the Seahawks (My favorite NFL team, who also won! 🎊) in the (other) Emerald City. Great weekend!

But more importantly for you, Episode 75 of The Art of Allowance Podcast went live this morning. I hope you enjoy it!

Three Dads Tell It Like It Is: For this special podcast episode, Joe Saul-Sehy of Stacking Benjamins fame invited me to co-interview Jon Acuff, author of the new book How Teens Win.

(You might remember Joe and his infinite wisdom from a previous podcast episode, during which I turned the mic on him.)

I think you’re going to enjoy this conversation featuring not one, not two, but three dads talking about the successes and failures we’ve each encountered on our money-smart journeys.

While I hope you listen to our full discussion, don’t miss Jon’s timeless advice about not suffocating your kids with your desire for achievement. It’s about twenty-five minutes in.

And if you like this joint hosting format, you might also enjoy my conversations with Samantha Paxson and Kelly Mindell. Both episodes are co-hosted by Robin Taub, a two-time podcast guest and the author of The Wisest Investment.

Bravery 101 – A Parenting Prerequisite: Being a parent is humbling. There are weeks when it feels like every day is littered with mistakes made or opportunities squandered. Which is why I want to share the following short clip. In it, Jon reminds us that deciding to parent our teens is a brave choice.

Of course, we really don’t have a choice. We have to parent. It’s our job. Still, I think it’s always encouraging to hear from someone who can sum up enduring insight in a way that makes us feel like he’s right there with us, sticking out his chin to help his kids in the same way we stick out ours to help our children.

This week’s wisdom features a similar sentiment from another parent who has been through the gauntlet of those teenage years. So read on for more encouragement!

Weekly Wisdom:

“Your child and your work hold you hostage, suck you dry, ruin your sleep, mess with your head, treat you like dirt, and then you discover they’ve given you that gold nugget you were looking for all along.” [emphasis mine]
—Anne Lamott

Anne’s wisdom is as practical as it is timeless. I’m not sure I would have finished my book, The Art of Allowance, without her book about writing and life, Bird by Bird, from which I pulled this quote. Her words encouraged me to keep going, and they continue to inspire me to step up to the keyboard weekly to share these ideas I hope you’ll find helpful.

While we know the pleasure of a single gold nugget is fleeting, finding the resolve—indeed, the bravery Jon invokes above—is what we need to continue our journeys.

And since we’re at it, let’s also remember to enjoy what we can along the way.

John,
Chief Mammal
